Raw art paintings

With Carré d'artistes, discover the art brut through a selection of contemporary paintings. This unique vision of art implies an understanding that breaks free from the classical pictorial framework.

What is art brut?

Art brut is an artistic variation that was supposedly created in 1978 during the event "les singuliers de l'art" organized at the museum of modern art in Paris. This movement brings together professional autodidacts who wish to deviate from the classic rules of art.
This artistic form is an evolution of the Art brut which was theorized by the painter Jean Dubuffet in 1945. According to him, this pictorial category includes marginalized and spontaneous works, those produced by anarchists, prisoners and psychotics. In other words, painters do not have an artistic culture and can use all the supports and techniques available to them to express their emotions.
In reality, the Art brut only designates works freed from artistic constraints that define pictorial practice, in an amateur setting or with a therapeutic objective, for example.
The Art brut appears to be an evolution of the Art brut in the sense that certain artists seduced by this style of painting seized on the concept to market their works. The art brut paintings often reflect an emotional experience. Carré d'artistes invites you to understand this unique pictorial art with the works of Larbi Zaidi, a self-taught painter featuring disturbing characters, symbols of an insurmountable adversity that afflicts some people.

How is art brut practised?

By definition, art brut paintings do not obey any structural rule that governs its practice. The painter's brush obeys his impulses and each line becomes the pure reflection of a concept, of an emotion.
It is clear that this pictorial style is similar to abstract art insofar as the spontaneity of the artist makes it possible to depict a very symbolic vision of his subject of expression. To see this, just contemplate the works of Sylvie Colin, which suggests a world very different from what is depicted by the mixture of painting and collage.
The artist can express various artistic trends, going from Cubism to Surrealism for example. The works of Jean Dubuffet demonstrate this mixture of styles, which can evoke Picasso and Munch.
In short, art brut stands out because of the artistic culture of the painters. Although painters who are often self-taught do not respect the traditional codes of pictorial art, they have certain knowledge that allows them to mix all the possibilities offered by painting. It is therefore possible for them to mix all styles in their most raw aspect in all forms of media.

Carré d'artistes offers you a selection of art brut paintings from the most talented contemporary artists. Far from representing an artistic sub-category, this style denotes a unique approach that other panting trends cannot offer.
