Sogoli | Contemporary Artist: Artworks & Biography

Passionate about painting from the age of nine, Myriam Agout taught herself processes and techniques on her own by copying the works of the great painters. Aged eighteen, this self-taught Iranian artist arrived in France to join the École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Paris, then began her career working for several architect’s offices in the Paris region. Gifted with a relatively extensive and insatiable artistic fibre, she devoted herself in parallel and with great enthusiasm, to creating pottery and sculptures.Despite everything, at the beginning of the 2000s, her desire to take the medium of painting up again became increasingly insistent; so, after a little more than a decade dedicated to the command of construction techniques, her vocation as an architect gave way definitively to her pictorial practice. From then on, Myriam took on the pseudonym “Sogoli” – which means the favourite one in old Persian – and gave herself fully to the joys of composing on canvas. Carried by her emotions, she interprets her subjects instinctively. As colour is central in her artistic quest, the artist deliberately chose to use warm and bright tones that she enhances with resin to increase visual depth. This means of expressing herself through colour, which the artist describes as essential, “has become a resistance to the darkness imposed on women in [her] home country.”Sometimes calling upon oils, sometimes acrylics, Myriam conceives her paintings as expressive and brilliant spaces, which give an important part to individual interpretation, thus offering each viewer the possibility of coming and “drawing upon their own visions, feelings and emotions”.
