Sculptures by subject

Carré d'artistes presents a large selection of sculptures of various themes. The main and contemporary themes in sculpture are mainly nudes, animals and pop icons. But sculptures can deal with any theme: mythology, scenes from life, famous characters, fantasy or abstract, everyday objects, and more.

The main themes of sculpture

Sculptures of nudes

Sculptures of nudes is an important artistic genre. From antiquity until today, sculptors have been captivated by representation of the human body. Whether to study human anatomy, to reveal the beauty or the particularity of a body, to sublimate the female body or reveal male musculature, to go deeper into the study of movement – artists very often produce nudes in sculpture.

Sculptures of animals

Animals are also frequently reproduced in sculpture. The main subject is an animal, domestic or not. For a long time, animal sculpture was not given the appreciation it deserves. It is with modern sculpture, in the 19th century, then with contemporary sculpture, that animal sculpture has gained in importance and value. Antoine-Louis Barye is one of the main modern representatives of this theme of sculpture. Today, these sculptures lean towards anthropomorphism – that is to say that animals often adopt human postures and expressions.

Sculptures of pop icons

Pop icons are not only represented in painting, but also in sculpture. Since the pop art movement of the 60s, the pop spirit has permeated art everywhere and is not running out of steam. The sculpture of pop icons is therefore largely inspired by the pop culture: it picks up the codes and represents famous people recognizable by the majority of people. This is the case with icons of Star Wars, Disney, other well-known cartoons, contemporary stars, American superheroes, etc.

Other themes in sculpture

Mythological or fantasy sculptures

Sculptures with themes from mythology were very common in history. Today, neither the theme of mythology nor that of religion really inspires artists any longer. As an extension, they turned more to the theme of fantasy, which has become a very specific genre. Fantasy sculpture picks up the codes of the fantasy genre and reproduces things that do not really exist: monsters, fantasy landscapes, not-quite-human beings, etc.

Sculptures of famous people

Sculptors have long reproduced famous people, as we do today by representing our popular icons. Whether standing or on their mounts, these figures were often kings, emperors, lords or important figures of an era.

There are many other themes in sculpture. Everything that is possible to be represented belongs to a specific theme. Thus we find, for example, hunting sculptures, funerary, religious, allegorical, ornamental, monumental sculptures, and even contemporary sound sculptures.

At Carré d'artistes, come and discover different themes of sculptures by contemporary artists such as Pappay, Sebastien Chartier, Julien Rey, Floh, and many more.
